Soon after arriving in Minneapolis from California, Emil Schatzlein opened his saddle shop at this location in 1907. The Selby-Lake inter-city streetcar had recently opened, and the widespread presence of automobiles was still in the future. At that time, Lake Street was home to numerous blacksmiths, stables, and harness shops. Initially, Schatzlein's business primarily served working horses and their owners; these included South Minneapolis market farmers as well as the neighborhood's plentiful delivery teams. In 1936, Schatzlein moved the business a couple of blocks to the east. In 1958, Emil's son, Jerry, took over the business and expanded it to include clothing sales, attracting a new market. In 2007, Schatzlein Saddle Shop celebrated 100 years as a family-run business on Lake Street.
