Inscription. The Capilla de la Lomita was built on the ranch of Mr. Rene Guyard in 1865 by the Oblate fathers. In addition to being a place of worship, it acted as a way station for Oblates traveling on horseback between Brownsville and Roma. It was rebuilt in 1891 and remained in use until 1911 when the Oblates completed a move to their church in the newly established town of Mission. At its height, the Capilla de la Lomita acted as headquarters for Oblate priests serving 5 other chapels, 75 ranches, and numerous villages throughout the Hidalgo County area.

La Lomita ("little hill") is a small hill and the adjoining historical site of a former mission and ranch headquarters maintained by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. It is located off Farm Road 1016 near the Rio Grande five miles south of Mission in southwestern Hidalgo County. The property comprised two Spanish land grants, or porciones, awarded in 1767. The little hill is on the western edge of Porción 57, which thus became known as the La Lomita grant. The adjoining historical site is on the eastern edge of the neighboring Porción 56.
