It was surveyed through Indiana in 1827 and built through Terre Haute in 1834. This pioneer corridor of American history became paved U.S. 40 in 1926 and was completed coast to coast by 1935. In Terre Haute as Wabash Avenue, it intersected the original U.S. 41, the nation's major north-south highway, at this site.

1. U.S. Route 40 on Wikipedia. As the marker says, the U.S. Highway System began in 1926, and Highway 40 originally went from San Francisco, California to Atlantic City, New Jersey. The highway, like most roads, had changed over the years and its length was shortened. As of 2024, its western terminus is near Heber City, Utah while its eastern terminus remains the same. Most of U.S. 40 parallels Interstate 70. Portions of the road have been deemed historic, as there have been historical societies based off Highway 40 and the Historic National Road (which most of Highway 40 was signed on).
