1. The Colored Conventions: A Buried History Marker
Starting in 1830 and continuing until well after the Civil War, free, freed, and self-emancipated Black Americans gathered in state and national political conventions. A cornerstone of Black organizing in the nineteenth century, these "Colored Conventions" brought Black communities together in a seven decades-long campaign for civil and human rights. The first "Colored Convention" took place in Philadelphia.
In these two murals, situated at 315 and 351 Washington Avenue, the Colored Conventions Project has partnered with Mural Arts Philadelphia to memorialize the Colored Conventions Movement, its organizers, and its participants. Please scan the QR code below to learn more about the project.
Special thanks to Delores Y. Green, Rebecca Washington, Irene Roust, Mildred Leftwich, Dorothy Erving and Rachel Fogan.
