Regarding Rosalía de Castro. While the marker was being photographed, a Galician pointed out that the marker contained something of an indignity. That is in the date “17th of May”, the Spanish word for the month, mayo, was used rather than the Galician, maio. This might be considered a minor slight by some but for the fact that this was the publication date of her first book of poems in Galician, Cantares gallegos (“Galician Songs”), in 1863, and it was thus this date that became Día das Letras Galegas (“Galician Literature Day”), a holiday since 1963 that celebrates Galician language and literature.
