Inscription.
In the 1920s, Tacony was a busy industrial center. In New Jersey, farmers had produce to sell to the city. Meanwhile, the closest ferry was in Center City.

To meet a demand for easier access between the two shores, the Tacony-Palmyra Ferry Company began operations in 1922 promising "no congestion or traffic jams." It carried hundreds of thousands of passengers each year.

Two ferries—the Tacony and the Palmyra—ran from 6 a.m. to midnight seven days a week. Regular ferry service ended with the opening of the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge in 1929.

[Caption:]
The fifteen-minute ferry ride across the river cost five cents for foot passengers and forty-five cents for vehicles.
