Regarding Historical Society of Porter County Old Jail Museum. The Porter County jail and Sheriff's residence represent a concept of local law enforcement that appears frequently in Indiana. Often an attached residence was provided for the Sheriff because he must be on 24-hour duty. His wife would cook for the prisoners and act as jail matron.
This example is unusual because it combines the Italianate and castle styles of architecture, thereby reflecting the specific uses of the buildings.
