1. Laid to Rest Marker
Inscription. Researchers estimate between 180 and 300 total interments in Haas Cemetery. Of the identified individuals buried here,
45% passed away before the age of 18
21% lived to be age 70 or older
34 was the average age upon passing

Today, some markers are gone – leaving only indentations in the soil; other headstones are weathered and unreadable; still others remain as some of our nation's earliest works of rural art.
“O Let our thoughts and wishes fly
Above these gloomy shades,
To those bright worlds beyond the sky
Which sorrow ne'er invades.

There joys unseen by mortal eyes,
Or reason's feeble ray
In ever blooming prospect rise,
Exposed to no decay.”

– Headstone inscription, Martha Ann Haas (1838-1890)
