Inscription.
This Tanbark stone came from J.E. Rhoads & Sons of Delaware. Founded in 1702 in Chester County, Pa. as a leather tannery, it is the oldest firm in the United States.

As shown above, the stone was rolled on its serrated edge to grind tanbark (oak or hemlock bark containing tanning), used in the tanning solution during the leather-making process.
