Herdenkingsplein (07): Schuilgelegenheid / Shelter
Shelter in the fortifications
The Air Protection Service was founded in 1939. During the occupation, this service was to ensure the darkening of towns and villages to prevent them from serving as a landmark for Allied aircraft.
Shelters were set up, such as here in the underground passages of the fortifications.
Erected 2022.

Overview (in translation): The Air Protection Service was founded in 1939. It was a measure to protect civilians from air raids. The first blackout exercises were held in the Netherlands in 1938. After the German invasion of Poland in September 1939, air raid shelters were built in the cities and anti-aircraft guns were installed. An important task of the LBD was to inform the civilian population of measures they could take themselves to protect themselves against air attacks. For example, information was provided about fire prevention and first aid courses were provided.(Submitted on February 14, 2024.)
