Cold Frames
North Garden
— [Tudor Place] —
Photographed By Devry Becker Jones (CC0), February 14, 2024
In the early 20th century, cold frames were used in the Tudor Place garden to grow vegetables and herbs. These structures, with origins in the 18th century, extend the growing season by creating a raised and enclosed bed in which seeds can be started early. The removable covers provide proper temperatures and humidity for germination during the cooler months of late winter and early spring.
