In January 1926, the local chapter of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters held its first meeting in Saint Paul's Rondo neighborhood; more than 50 men and women attended. By 1950, local rolls counted 700 members. Respected as educated, worldly citizens, porters worked hard to lift their families into the middle class.
