Excerpt(in translation): The explosive did not come from the German occupier, but from an English bomber, which was on its way to Germany with a squadron. The aircraft were all equipped with a new type of bomb: the blockbuster. So big and heavy that only one could fit on board. On the evening in question, a German night fighter managed to intercept one of the English aircraft, after which the pilot fled and dived to get rid of his bomb and then gain more speed. It worked: the aircraft returned safely to England. The crew's report states that they were convinced that the heavy bomb had been released on German territory. A misconception. The explosive - with enormous destructive power - appeared to have been dropped above Maastricht, as analysis of a photo of the explosion showed. The blockbuster crashed in Blauwdorp near Gildeweg and Gerard van Wermweg, where 22 of the 24 people were killed. The other theory is based on the combination of a high-explosive bomb, followed by several incendiary bombs, also of English origin. A mistake with fatal consequences. Made by young inexperienced pilots who didn't know any better. War at its cruelest.(Submitted on February 17, 2024.)
