1. Legend Marker
Inscription. In 1864 Genl. Jos. Shelby, moving from Clarksville to Batesville, passed through Richwoods and Buckhorn. At this place, known then as Buckhorn, his advance met Bill Williams commanding a Federal Company. A battle was fought. 47 were killed and 2 captured.

Williams. The men were Union and Confederate deserters and bushwackers. In the fight between Shelby and Williams, forty-seven of Williams’s men were killed, and two who were captured were executed the next day.
