Inscription.
In 1846 the Rev. William Augustus Muhlenberg, DD (1798-1877), Episcopal priest, educator, and caretaker of the elderly and destitute, proposed a hospital for patients, regardless of religious faith or ability to pay. St. Luke's opened in 1858 at Fifth Avenue between 54th and 55th Streets, and relocated to Morningside Heights in 1896.

Many medical breakthroughs were achieved at St. Luke's. The hospital pioneered radium therapy, plastic surgery techniques, and the development of surgical treatment for tuberculosis of the spine, and led the way in caring for sickle cell and HIV/AIDS patients.

In 2013, St. Luke's parent company merged with The Mount Sinai Medical Center. St. Luke's was renamed Mount Sinai Morningside in 2020.

Marker placed by the Morningside Heights Historic District Committee and Mount Sinai Morningside in 2022 to honor this history, as we continue to support and serve those in need.
