Nilda Maria Nesurun Pinto (1918-1954)

Toen op Curaçao in de jaren dertig de Nederlandse taal nog de norm was in het onderwijs, zette Nilda Jesurun Pinto zich in voor het behoud van het Papiaments, de moedertaal van haar leerlingen. Ze verzamelde traditionele liedjes, kinderspelletjes en kinderverhalen, waaronder over de spin Kompa Nanzi, die alle grote dieren en zelfs de mens te slim af is. Op radiozender Curom (tegenwoordig Z86 genaamd) verzorgde ze een kinderprogramma met liedjes en verhalen in het Papiaments en had ze een eigen koor, De Kanariepietjes. Naar haar zijn ook een straat in de buitenwijk Brievengat en een school in Willemstad op Curaçao vernoemd.

In the 1930s, when the Dutch language was still the norm in education in Curaçao, Nilda Jesurun Pinto committed herself to the preservation of Papiamento, the mother tongue of her pupils.
