122: Hadrian's Wall constructed to hinder invasions into Britannia.
167: Missionaries Phagan and Deruvian spread Christianity in Britain.
209: St. Alban, first British martyr, slain in one of the few Christian persecutions to take place on the island.
306: Constantine proclaimed Emperor at York.
313: Edict of Milan is issued, legalizing Christianity in the Roman Empire.
400-430: Rise in Pictish, Irish and Saxon incursions.
410: Roman Armies withdraw. Britain is advised to look to its own defense.
440: Saxons, Angles and other North Sea Germans gain footholds on Britain's east and south coasts.

1034: Duncan, ruler of Strathclyde, becomes King of Scotland.
1039-63: Gruffudd ap Llywelyn, reunites most of Wales til his death in battle against England.
1040: MacBeth slays Duncan, to become King of Scotland.

1086: Domesday survey taken a survey to assess the tax potential of England.
1166: Assize of Claredon. The jury system begins to replace trial by ordeal in England.
1167: University of Oxford founded.
1189: Richard the Lionhearted departs on largely unsuccessful third crusade, leaving John to rule in his place.
1209: Cambridge University founded.
1215: King John signs Magna Charta.
1246-82: Llywelyn ap Gruffudd rules much of Wales.
1258-65: Parliament evolves out of curia regis following baronial revolt against arbitrary rule of Henry III and his favorites.
1267: Treaty of Montgomery legitimizes Llywelyn ap Gruffudd's claim to title "Prince of Wales".
1276-77: First War of Welsh Independence, ending with the Treaty of Aberconwy which nullifies the Treaty of Montgomery.
1282-83: Second War of Welsh Independence.
1295: A mutual defense treaty the "Auld Alliance" is signed between Scotland and France.
1295: Edward I, recognizing need for reform, summons "Model Parliament".
1296: Annexation of Scotland and England. Scotland's Coronation Stone - the "Stone of Destiny" - moved to Westminster Abbey.
1301: Edward I revives title

1314: Battle of Bannockbum results in Scottish independence from England.
1348-49: The Black Death sweeps through Britain. Over a quarter of the population dies.

1400-12: Owen Glendower leads Welsh revolt and declares himself Prince of Wales.
1411: University of St. Andrews founded.
1455-85: The Wars of the Roses. Dispute between the Houses of Lancaster and York over claims to the English throne.
1485: Accession of Henry VII establishes Welsh lineage on the English throne.
1503: King Henry VII of England marries his daughter to James IV of Scotland, giving rise to the Union of the Crowns in 1603.
1512: Under new terms of "Auld Alliance", all Scots are granted French citizenship and vice versa.
1603: James VI of Scotland becomes James I of England, bringing about the Union of the Crowns.
1625: Charles I becomes King of England.
1640-46: First English Civil War. Forces of Parliament defeat Charles I.
1648-60: Second English Civil War & Commonwealth. Charles I is executed. Puritan dominated forces led by Oliver Cromwell defeat all opposition in Britain.
1661: Invited back by General Monk's reconstituted Parliament, Charles II crowned at Scone. The last coronation in Scotland.
1682: Advocates' Library founded, later to become the National Library of Scotland.
1688-89: Glorious Revolution enthrones William & Mary and with the "Declaration of Rights" establishes supremacy of Parliament.
1692: Massacre of Glencoe.
1694: Bank of England founded.
1695: Bank of Scotland founded.
1707: Treaty of Union; Scotland united with England to form Great Britain.
1715: First Jacobite rebellion.
1744: The world's first Golf Club (the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers) founded.
1745: Second Jacobite rebellion.
1746: Battle of Culloden.
1747: The wearing of the kilt is prohibited from August 1st
1775: Glenturret Distillery, Crieff, the oldest in Scotland, established.
1775-83: American War of Independence, Britain loses American colonies.
1780-1850: Britain leads world into the Industrial Revolution.
1801: The first census taken in England and Wales, held every ten years, except 1941.
1807: The slave trade to British colonies is abolished.
