* Asterisk indicates coat of arms is shared by more than one surname or a variant spelling exists.

The prefixes Mac and O were widely dropped during the submergence of the Irish under English rule. While it is popularly beleived that Mac is Scottish and Mc is Irish, Mc is actually just an abbreviation of Mac. Any descendants who took their grandfather's given name as a surname usually added the O, while Mac referred to the father's given name. With the revival of national awareness during this century, there has been a resumption in the use of prefixes. Some names like O'Brien, O'Neill, McGuire, McNamara etc., never changed, while others like Murphy, Doyle, Kennedy etc., never resumed the use of a prefix. The addition or deletion of the prefix does not change the coat of arms, look under all forms of the family name.
