Inscription. The Rio Vista Elementary School was completed and opened for classes during the 1927-1928 school year. The two story building with red tile roof was built for a cost of $34,860. Due to low enrollment, it closed and reopened several times throughout its history before the doors were shut for the final time in 2009. In January 2012, the City of St. Petersburg reached an agreement with the Pinellas County School Board to create a neighborhood park for the enjoyment of people of all ages.

The original Rio Vista Elementary School flagpole which was installed when the school first opened, had a bald eagle perched at its peak. The eagle was purportedly carried by troops during the Civil War.

Erected 2014 by The City of St. Petersburg.
