Excerpt: BALLSTON SPA — Last February, the LaRue Family of Charlton donated a collection of documents that had been held in their family for more than 200 years. These documents were discovered about 50 years ago nailed beneath the floorboards of the attic in their historic Charlton farmhouse. The collection includes 606 documents ranging in date from 1756 to the early 1800s. And while their significance and value to local research has yet to be scratched, it is clear they will add immensely to our understanding of Saratoga County history. The collection centers around a man named Joseph LaRue. LaRue, his wife Ann and their 10 children moved from New Jersey to Charlton (then called New Freehold) in 1775, when New York was still a colony of Great Britian. A wealthy man, he originally purchased a 300-acre tract of land but when he got here found the land insufficient for his needs and purchased an additional 200 acres at 16 shillings per acre. The original receipt for this land purchase, dated 1776, is included in the collection. What makes this collection so important to the history of Saratoga County is that when the town of Charlton was officially formed in 1792, LaRue was named a justice of the peace. Many of the documents in the collection are related to his duties as justice and contain invaluable information about early residents and the types of cases that were being brought before him.(Submitted on April 9, 2024.)
