Inscription. Originally known as Darlington Mills, Bowmanville was founded in 1794 when an American family of Loyalists settled near the site of Vanstone's Mill. The first businesses were established in the river valley south of the mill but are now gone.

Charles Bowman, a Scottish merchant, came to the area from Montreal in 1824. He purchased, planned & encouraged business development on his land to the east of the valley. Before 1830 this area was called 'Bowman's Village' until the name officially changed to Bowmanville in 1853.

Over the years much of King Street has stayed the same. Many of the original building remain. Although most of the merchants have come & gone, some local businesses that began a century ago continue to prosper.

Also see . . .  Community Stories- 150 Years of Celebrating Community. Bowmanville's story started with the arrival of the first settlers in 1794. The Conant, Burk and Trull families traveled from the United States of America and personally selected this area to call home. By 1817 the Kingston Road was completed making passage from Kingston to York possible. This highway also made it possible for a village by the name of Darlington Mills to evolve. By c.1830 locals began referring to the village as Bowmanville, fondly named after store/land owner and money lender Charles Bowman of Montreal.
