1. Building Stone Boats (Lake of the Woods Museum). Excerpt:
(by Lori Nelson) In 1897, an enterprising young man left his hometown in Barrie, Ontario and journeyed west. When he reached Rat Portage, he stepped off the train, set down his bags, looked around, and decided that it was here that he would set up his business. The young man was John William Stone. The business he established, the J.W. Stone Boat Manufacturing Company, became synonymous with fine craftsmanship and superior boat building, and was known throughout western Canada as the place to have your boat built.(Submitted on April 22, 2024, by Cosmos Mariner of Cape Canaveral, Florida.)
2. The Main Street Dock Mural. Excerpt:
Some families had special boats made to cruise the lake in style. The boat in this painting is called “The Grace Anne”. It was made as a special birthday present for Grace Furlong. The boat was fabulously appointed in mahogany, wonderful fabrics and a specially made set of china. The Furlong family (now fourth generation) still comes from all parts of North America to enjoy family times on Coney Island, but the boat has been sold. It now operates as a private enterprise and can be rented for special events and corporate cruises. The other boat depicted was called the “Clipper” and was involved in the illegal whisky trade of the 20’s.(Submitted on April 22, 2024, by Cosmos Mariner of Cape Canaveral, Florida.)
