Kingwood in Preston County, West Virginia — The American South (Appalachia)
Preston Memorial Hospital
In the early 1950's, Preston County needed a hospital, so the county court decided to build a medical facility using approximately $1.5 million dollars. The Kingwood Fire Department donated land for the hospital, and construction began. Soon, the hospital was placed under the supervision of a Board of Trustees, which was appointed by the Preston County Court. On July 16, 1955, less than two years later, the new hospital officially opened. Reporters described the hospital as "One of the finest of its size in the country." In 2015, Preston Memorial Hospital began a new chapter in history. After being torn down on April 30, 2015, the new Preston Memorial Hospital opened on May 17, 2015. The hospital offers various services. To this day, Preston Memorial continues to serve patients of Preston County.
