Inscription.
The Italian Community of New Castle, Delaware. . This monument is dedicated to the immigrants who came to New Castle from Italy starting in the late 1890s. They came primarily from the Abruzzo Region which is located on the Adriatic east from Rome. Residing for the most part on the west side of New Castle in "Shawtown," they established a very close-knit community. They celebrated their heritage and publicly professed their faith in God and their love for Saint Anthony, their patron Saint. These immigrants became American and proudly served their community and country. We, their descendants, will be forever grateful to them for the legacy they bequeathed to us.
