1. The Yorkshire Museum Marker
Inscription. In 1828 the Yorkshire Philosophical Society acquired the site of St Mary's Abbey to build the Yorkshire Museum.

It was built to house the society's collection of antiquities and geological specimens. These included prehistoric animal bones found in a cave in Kirkdale, which at the time were thought by some to be evidence of Noah's flood.

Society members continued to collect archaeological artefacts, botanical and natural history specimens and an impressive library. The museum today has amazing collections of national importance.

The museum building is built on top of abbey ruins and is designed in the Greek Revival style, popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Georgians interest in the archaeological ruins of Ancient Greece promoted this architectural style throughout Europe. The architect was William Wilkins, who also designed the National Gallery.
