Zij stand op tegen onrecht en discriminatie
Het jaar is 1940. Hitler-Duitsland bezet Nederland en ook Amsterdam. Wanneer de bezetter bepaalde groepen burgers begint te vervolgen, trekt Jacoba zich onmiddellijk hun lot aan. Al in het eerste oorlogsjaar richt zij een verzetsgroep op. Samen met 150 medewerkers zorgt zij met gevaar voor eigen leven voor schuiladressen, voedselbonnen, persoonsbewijzen en medische hulp aan 4000 onderduikers, onder wie veel joodse mensen. Dankzij een unieke cijfercode weet Jacoba alle namen en adressen geheim te houden, tot de bevrijding in 1945 aan toe. Ook haar woonadres Antillenstraat 45-1 wordt niet door de nazi's ontdekt. Jacoba is de enige vrouw in de top van het Amsterdamse verzet tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Een vrouw die duizenden mensen het leven redde.

A Woman of the Resistance
She stood up against injustice and discrimination
The year was 1940. Hitler's Germany occupied the Netherlands and also Amsterdam. When the occupier began to prosecute certain groups of citizens, Jacoba immediately took their fate to heart. During the first year of the war she had already founded a resistance group. Together with 150 employees, she, at the risk of her own life, provided safe houses, ration vouchers, identity cards and medical aid to 4,000 people in hiding, many of them Jewish. Thanks to a unique numerical code, Jacoba was able to keep names and addresses secret until the liberation in 1945. Even her home address, Antillenstraat 45-1, was never discovered by the Nazis. Jacoba was the only woman at the top of an Amsterdam resistance group during the Second World War. A woman who saved thousands of people's lives.

Excerpt: Jacoba van Tongeren (19031967) was an Amsterdam nurse who saved the lives of thousands of people during the German occupation, but her story languished in obscurity until 2015. Between 1940 and 1945, Jacoba led a resistance group of some 140 men and women. She came up with a unique code to refer to the members of her group and people in hiding: the letters of their names were converted into numbers, and the group members knew one another only by their number. In 194445, she was the only woman in the upper echelons of the Amsterdam resistance.(Submitted on May 14, 2024.)
It was not until 70 years after the liberation, in 2015, that Jacobas life story was revealed. Three years earlier Paul van Tongeren, a nephew, had come across his aunts memoirs in an archive in The Hague, where they had been gathering dust for 50 years. Jacobas experiences during the war turned out to be extraordinary. Paul edited the handwritten texts into a book, Jacoba van Tongeren and the unknown resistance heroes of Group 2000.
