1. Lida Rogers Marker
Inscription. In 1927, Lida Rogers, a biology teacher at Holland High School, spoke to the Woman’s Literary Club about civic beauty. She proposed that the citizens of Holland construct playgrounds, parks, and a skate pond, and that we plant native trees and flowers to enhance the year-round beauty of our city. Miss Rogers also suggested that we plant tulips in every yard, as the Dutch in the Netherlands typically do, and that a day be set aside as Tulip Day. “I would do it,” she said, “not for the sake of advertising, but to add to the beauty of our city. Think it over and boost for it.” Tulip Time, Holland’s world-renowned festival, and Window on the Waterfront are her legacies, and the legacies of the Holland people, who, in her words, “thought it over and boosted for it!”
