The Miami Erie Canal in Dayton
Patterson Boulevard Canal Parkway
From 1828 to 1928, the Miami Erie Canal existed at the site of the present day Patterson Boulevard. The Miami Erie Canal was constructed to link the Ohio River with Lake Erie to the north.
Together with the Ohio Erie Canal between Portsmouth and Lake Erie, the Miami Erie Canal provided Ohio with waterways for transport and exporting goods. The canal system shaped the growth of Ohio and connected communities such as Cincinnati, Dayton, and Toledo during the early decades of the nineteenth century. It fostered the transformation of Dayton from a mainly rural economy to an industrial city.
