Inscription. A view of Dayton looking south from across the Great Miami River. The Miami Erie Canal (A), the old Millrace (B), the Commons (Cooper Park, C), are visible southeast of the Main Street covered bridge (D). This panorama provides a snapshot of Dayton on the verge of industrial development fostered by the canal and railroad. In the coming decades, the area in the vicinity of the Miami Erie Canal developed into Dayton's industrial district.
