1. Canal Buildings of the Past Marker

Inscription.
The George Roberts Central Machine Works building was located on Second Street west of the Miami Erie Canal Basin. The company, which was founded in 1867, manufactured pumping machinery until the early decades of the twentieth century. After the factory closed, the building was occupied by the Public Library's Natural History Museum from 1941 to 1958. The Roberts factory was demolished, and during the 1980s, Cooper Place, the first ownership housing project in downtown Dayton in over 60 years, was completed at the site.

The Dayton Machine Company building was located on First Street west of the Canal Basin. Founded in 1870, the company manufactured agricultural equipment. Situated to the north of the George Roberts Central Machine Works, the Dayton Machine Company was part of the industrial growth that preceded Delco and other nationally significant industries in the industrial district. The building was demolished during the mid-twentieth century and replaced with a parking lot. New townhomes were constructed on the site during the early twenty-first century.
