1. Canal Buildings of the Past Marker
The Swaynie House inn was located on the south side of First Street, east of the Miami Erie Canal. Built in 1839, the hotel was a center of the social scene near the canal, famous for its ballroom gatherings. The Swaynie House was popular among merchants travelling up and down the waterway. Pictured here in a derelict condition during the early twentieth century, the building was torn down for the construction of the Delco facility in about 1915.
The Cooper Medicine Company factory was located at the northeast in- tersection of First Street and the Miami Erie Canal Basin (later Patterson Boulevard). The factory produced the popular drug "Cooper's New Discovery," said to cure stomach and other ailments, during early twentieth century. The building was demolished in the mid-twentyth century.
