1. The Dayton Metro Library Marker

Inscription.
Past and future rub elbows in Cooper park as new library, nearly ready, crowds old. Modern building is designed to cope with reading explosion undreamed of back in '88.

In 1948, the Dayton Public Library changed from a school district library to a county district library. In 1956, it was renamed the Dayton and Montgomery County Public Library. By this time, the library collection had far outgrown the building's capacity. The library had about 28,000 volumes when it opened in 1888. The collection in 1959 was estimated to be over 300,000 volumes. Plans for the new library building, to be located at Cooper Park and along Third Street, were drawn that same year. In 1961, the new library opened its doors to the public. In 2002, the library was renamed as the Dayton Metro Library.

The 1962 photograph shows the newly built Dayton and Montgomery County Public Library, with the still-standing 1888 library building to its northeast. The old building was demolished to accommodate the present-day Cooper Park. The McKinley Statue was relocated to the rear of the new library. Patterson Boulevard is located in the background.
