Point Lookout in Taney County, Missouri — The American Midwest (Upper Plains)
Veterans Grove
The Patriotic Education Travel Program was founded to reinforce the Patriotic goal of the College. In June 2009, the inaugural trip provided the opportunity for 20 College of the Ozarks students and ten WWII Veterans to travel to the battlefields of Normandy for the 65th Anniversary of D-Day Since that time, over 100 students and 51 WWII Veterans have returned together to the battlefields of Europe and the Pacific.
The trees planted in this field are in remembrance of each of our beloved Veterans who shared their lives with our students on these trips. This idea originated with a student participant and was taken on as a project by the College Historians. This ongoing program ensures that their stories and sacrifices will not be forgotten.
Dedicated April 7, 2011, in conjunction with the visit of George W. Bush, 43rd President of the United States
"My sword I give to him that shall succeed me in my pilgrimage, and my courage and skill to him that can get it. My marks and scars I carry with me, to be a witness for me that I have fought His battles who will now be my rewarder." John Bunyan, The Pilgrim's Progress
So long as we live, they too shall live, for they are now a part of us. Our generation is a candle against the setting sun pf the "Greatest generation," and our veterans are indeed a part of each of us.
