Inscription. Alabama Astronaut Joe F. Edwards flew the seeds that formed this tree aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavor (OV-105). Launched on January 22, 1998, the seeds traveled with Edwards over 3.6 million miles. After 8 days, 19 hours, and 48 minutes of spaceflight at 18,000 miles per hour, they docked with the Mir Space Station. The seed returned safely to Earth, landing in Cape Canaveral, Florida, on January 31, 1998. The Alabama Aerospace Teachers' Association - in conjunction with the Cosmic Apple Seed Project - provided the seeds, and Mrs. Diane Watson's 3rd Grade Class at Webb Elementary School in Webb, Alabama Planted them in the spring of 1998.
