1. Timeline of Bridge History Marker
Inscription.
1926 Congress passed Pub. Bill No. 272 on May 22nd to finance the bridge.

1927 Construction began on August 15th.

1928 The bridge opened on August 24th, Gov. Harry F. Byrd cutting cutting the ribbon.

1939 The Rhode Island crashed into the bridge on June 3rd, leaving 2 injured.

1940 The bridge reopened on February 1st after 6 months of repairs.

1943 The Morehead crashed into the br on June 13th, reopening 90 days later after repairs.

1944 C.M. Jordan established the South Norfolk Bridge Commission, Inc. and served as its general manager and executive vice president.

1957 C.M. Jordan passed away at age 77.

1977 Ownership and maintenance of the Jordan Bridge transferred to the City of Chesapeake.

2004 Big Red, a crane barge, struck the bridge on January 4th. The bridge reopened 90 days after repairs.

2008 The City voted to suspend use of the bridge.

2009 Figg Bridge Developers submitted plans for a new privately-funded bridge that included removal of the original. City Council voted unanimously to approve on January 27th.

2010 Construction on the new bridge commenced.
