At the time of his selection as Herb Armstrong Award honoree, Richie Bancells was in his club-record 24th season as the Orioles Head Athletic Trainer, 28th with the team and 35th in the organization. Only the third head trainer in club history, Bancells is widely respected throughout the baseball and athletic training industries, serving two terms as president of PBATS, the baseball athletic trainers association, and sitting on MLB's Medical Advisory Committee. A member of the Maryland Athletic Trainers Hall of Fame, in 2008 the Orioles created an award in Bancells' name and that of his mentor, the late Ralph Salvon, given to local medical professionals whose timely actions demonstrate excellence in a medical emergency, Bancells was the first recipient.
