A durable left-hander, Tippy Martinez was the Orioles' all-time saves leader at the time of his retirement following the 1988 season. He came to Baltimore in a 10-player trade with New York during the 1976 season and pitched in more games for the Orioles than anyone but Jim Palmer. He set the club record with 76 appearances in 1982. Martinez led the team in saves for five seasons, 1980-84, but topped the 20-save mark only once. That came in 1983, when he went 9-3 with 21 saves and a 2.35 ERA for the World Champions. Tippy pitched four shutout innings to win the final game of the 1983 ALCS, but he may be best remembered, however, for a game that season in which he picked off three Toronto baserunners at first base in a single inning.
