Saadian Tombs
The Saadian Graves Funeral Complex was discovered in 1917 by the Department of Fine Arts and Historic Monuments. The Saadian Tombs complex has two architectural ensembles: The nucleus of the first ensemble, known as Qubba Lalla Massacuda, was erected by Sultan Abdallah Al-Ghalib in 1557 to house the tomb of his father Muhammad Sheikh, founder of the Saadian dynasty. Later, under the Ahmed Al-Mansour Dahbi (1578/1603), this complex underwent enlargement and beautification. Lalla Massaouda, the sultan's mother, was buried there. A second complex was built to the west. It has three rooms: the Mihrab room, the median room called the Twelve Columns room and the Three Niches room. The median room, the most luxurious in this complex, houses the tomb of Sultan Ahmed Al Mansour. The Mihrab hall, which was used as an oratory during the Saadian's time, housed Alawite tombs in the 18th century, including that of Sultan Moulay Al Yazid who died in 1792.
