The Bank of Westerville was established in 1883. In 1911, it built a new building on this site. The Depression hit Westerville November 1931, when the bank failed. Local businessmen banded together to form Citizens Bank which opened in April 1932, to replace the failed institution. Citizens continued in operation until 1963, when it was sold and renamed.

In 1951, this building was modernized with a new facade and enlarged with a two-story addition. The interior was remodeled at that time and for customers' convenience a “drive in window” was added.

A dramatic robbery took place here December 12, 1930, when two masked men with guns entered the bank, forced employees and customers to lie on the floor, and stole $6,529. Two Otterbein students entered the bank during the hold-up. One student, Alice Shively, said of the robber, “He flourished a gun, but I wasn't scared, not a particle.” Both men were apprehended and convicted. As a result of the incident, bullet-proof glass was installed to protect the tellers.
