Historic New Market
This Wickes House located on Congress Street was built five years prior to the battle of New Market. From the rooftop Southern Soldiers signaled with flags to the soldiers on the rooftop of "Stanley Hall" and "Marva" at various times during the war. At one time the Wickes family was forced to vacate for several weeks while Yankee soldiers occupied the house.
