Cod's 7-Ton Gun
Cod carried several types of main deck guns during WW II. First a 4-inch diameter gun was mounted forward of the conning tower. Later this 7-ton gun firing 5-inch diameter shells replaced it on Cod and most other US subs. Unlike previous sub guns, this is a 'wet-mount gun,' meaning it did not have to be sealed and unsealed before and after diving. Its fixed (one piece) ammunition weighed 74 pounds, including a 35-pound shell. Eight men manned this gun.
Erected by USS Cod Memorial.
