Barns
Before 1900 most barns were made from freshly harvested trees that were squared into timbers and joined together with mortise and tenon connections. The mortise (a cavity cut into the timber) was joined with the tenon (a projection on the end of a timber) and a wooden peg was hammered in place using a beetle - a wooden mallet, weighing as much as 15 pounds. This type of barn is called a timber frame, or a post and beam. When it was time to assemble the pieces, the whole community came together for a barn raising.
