O'Hara Township Community Park - The Landmark. . By 1903, The Meadows had fallen into disrepair. Robert C. Hall, a Pittsburgh stockbroker and real estate developer, purchased the land and took over the mansion, which he restored to its pre-Civil-War-era splendor. In 1905, Hall allowed Pittsburgh newsboys (most of whom were orphans) to set up a summer camp about where the O’Hara Community Park is today. After Hall’s untimely death at age 49 in 1914, the U.S. Government purchased a portion of the property in 1923 for a Veterans Hospital. The 208th Cavalry Regiment opened a training area on that property in 1928. The above photo shows the promotion of Lt. Col. George Sherrington to full colonel in a ceremony held in today’s park area. O’Hara Township purchased the Fox Chapel Road area of the government property in 1959 for its municipal building (opened in 1962) and proposed park, which was opened to the public in 1965. A larger municipal building was constructed on the same spot and dedicated in 1996.
