This site, part of a bigger parcel of land including the current Somerville Growing Center on Vinal Avenue, housed the Prospect Hill Grammar School (1842), which was renamed the Dr. Luther V. Bell elementary school (1874) after the Civil War hero and founder of the McLean Asylum. The school later became the Southern Junior High School (1918). After the building was demolished, Nunziato Field was dedicated to recreational use in 1997.
