Inscription.
This public park space derives its name from Quincy Aldersey Vinal, a prominent member of the Vinal family. The family originally owned much of the surrounding land until it was subdivided by real estate investors, beginning in 1850, fueled by the growth of successful industries along Washington Street and Somerville Ave.

Many years later, a fire destroyed the original house built on this site and, in 1989, the lot was preserved as a natural open space for residents and a habitat for birds. Created under the auspices of the Somerville Conservation Commission, the area was known as the Quincy Street Open Space. Since that time, local residents have appreciated and maintained the site.

The new Quincy Street Open Space honors its origins by creating a shaded woodland where native plants can provide a natural environment for community gatherings and reflection and an outdoor classroom where children can interact with nature.

Erected by City of Somerville.
