Inscription. Distinguished Polish-born virologist, immunologist, and director of Wistar Institute, 1957-91, which he transformed into a leading biomedical research facility. He had earlier developed the first successful live oral polio vaccine. Led Wistar in development of vaccines for rubella, rabies, and rotavirus. Pioneered the use of monoclonal antibodies in cancer diagnosis and treatment. National Institutes of Health grantee for over 50 years.
