The position of a Mormon Battalion volunteer was one of shared allegiance. He showed his loyalty as a United States citizen in a historically pivotal military endeavor. At the same time, he supported a mutually beneficial arrangement between his church and his nation. The battalion soldiers uniform allowance of 42 dollars each, plus much of their pay, went to the Mormon exodus from the Missouri river to their destination in the valley of the Great Salt Lake and to help gather those exiled church members too poor to make the journey from Nauvoo, Illinois. Moreover, the battalion march, in effect, moved more than 500 of the Latter-day Saints west at government expense.

3. The thoughts of leaving my family...
"The thoughts of leaving my family at this critical time are indescribable. They were far from the land of their nativity, situated upon a lonely prairie with no dwilling but a wagon, the scorching sun beating upon them, with the prospect of the cold winds of December finding them in the same bleak, creary place.
My family consisted of a wife and two small children, who were left in company with an aged father and mother and a brother. Most of the battalion left families, some in care of the church an some in the care of relatives, with some in their own care. When we were to meet with them again, God only knew. Nevertheless we did not feel to murmur."
