1. With Toil and Courage, Until we Meet Again Marker
Inscription. Thirty-three women accompanied the Mormon Battalion. They, too, endured the hardships of the march, suffering hunger, thirst and illness. Five completed the entire journey to San Diego the rest were sent with the "sick detachments" to Pueblo, Colorado. There, they would join Mormon emigrants from Mississippi and await the coming of the main body of pioneers. Wives and mothers left behind had to manage the rigors of the trek and endure the loneliness. They managed as best they could through the assistance of the church, their husbands advance pay and their own resourcefulness, as with one wife who exchanged nursing services for housing. Their courage and resolve are reflected in the words of one such woman who said she would rather be "a soldier's widow than a coward's wife."
