1. Washington Square Marker
Inscription. In 1825, Philadelphia's city council paid tribute to America's first President by changing the name of Southeast Square to Washington Square. A life-size statue of George Washington and an accompanying Tomb of the Unknown Soldier of the Revolution were erected here in the 1950s. Washington's likeness is a bronze cast of a marble original dating from about 1790. It is the only full-length statue of Washington modeled from life. A memorial flame burns in front of this famous figure, and fourteen flagpoles designed to bear battle standards line the Square with flags representing the original thirteen colonies and the one nation they formed.

Erected by Philadelphia Phillies Baseball Club.
