1. Germantown Marker

Inscription. Germantown's story is one of religious freedom, tolerance patriotism, abolitionism, architectural excellence, industry and civic service. The people who founded Germantown were families fleeing religious persecution and economic hardship in Germany's northern Rhineland founded the community in 1683. These settlers brought with them to America a wide variety of Old World crafting skills and a common desire to participate in William Penn's "holy experiment."
